Meditations #5
5.
You are being heard, beloved.
Does this hearten you?
It should.
At the back of the universe, far down, deep down,
there are Ears, and Eyes, and a Loving Heart.
You are surrounded by Goodness.
And the Goodness is coming.
Just hold on.
It won’t be long now.
Oh, I know how it looks—rather the opposite, eh? All the fear and tumult of the age; say nothing of the darkness of your own heart—a darkness that on your worst days feels thick enough to blot out the sun and the stars.
Darkness thick and dreadful.
I know. I know how many times you’ve sent your prayers to the heavens only to have them fall back to the earth, dead in your lap. How often your cries have caught in your throat, how often you’ve choked on your petitions, mouth and lips dry with too much pleading. I know. I know how many times you’ve hurled urgencies into a bottomless void.
I know. I know because I’ve done it too.
We all—all who have set out on the Way—have.
Hearts ravished by the Goodness,
we hope for goodness—and see so little of it.
This will be a wound, beloved—an open wound that will not heal.
Nor can it—not this side of the Raising, anyway;
for it is a wound of love,
and it is your love for the Goodness that opens and reopens it,
your desire that leaves it unstanched.
In the waiting that is your lot you will be tempted to abandon your high desire.
To settle for the lesser.
I implore you now: never let go of your love.
For it is love that keeps you true;
wounds of high desire make you whole.
This will make sense in time.
Just please hold on.
It won’t be long now.
You are being heard.
And help is on the way.

“So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help.”
(Isaiah 30:18 NLT)
Amen
